SSE Renewables has officially taken a final investment decision to move forward with its inaugural onshore wind farm projects in Italy. Construction is set to begin soon on the Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farms located in Puglia, southern Italy.
Project Details
- Combined Capacity: The two wind farms will have a total installed capacity of 17.3 MW, featuring five onshore turbines.
- Turbine Supplier: Siemens Gamesa has been selected to supply and install five SG 3.4-132 MW turbines at the project sites.
- Completion Timeline: SSE aims to complete the projects and achieve commercial operation by 2026.
- Economic Impact: The projects are expected to support approximately 70 construction jobs at peak delivery, contributing positively to the local economy and supply chain in Puglia.
- Energy Generation: Once operational, the wind farms will generate enough renewable energy to power around 6,000 homes annually.
Strategic Importance
Gianluca Mercurio, Country Manager for SSE Renewables in Italy, expressed enthusiasm about the projects, stating, “These are strategic projects for SSE Renewables as they are our first wind farms to enter construction in Italy.” He emphasized the importance of these wind farms in generating homegrown renewable energy, enhancing energy security, and meeting critical climate targets for Italy.
SSE’s Broader Portfolio

The addition of these two projects expands SSE’s portfolio of in-construction sites in Southern Europe to over 100 MW. In addition to the Italian projects, SSE is also advancing its wind energy initiatives in France and Spain, with ongoing projects such as the 28 MW Chaintrix wind farm in France and the 64 MW Jubera wind project in Spain, both expected to be operational in the coming years.
Conclusion
SSE Renewables’ commitment to developing renewable energy projects in Italy marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s energy landscape and supporting its transition to sustainable energy sources.
