President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has just announced a super cool plan: his administration is aiming to make Raa atoll Vaadhoo, a beautiful island in the Maldives, 100 percent powered by renewable energy by the end of this year!
In a mega 14-hour press conference yesterday, President Muizzu emphasized that his government is seriously focused on creating opportunities for investment in renewable energy. He mentioned that several projects are already underway in this area.
One of these key projects is transforming Vaadhoo into an island powered entirely by renewable energy. This initiative was initially announced during the President’s visit to Vaadhoo back in January.
“We have decided to make Raa atoll Vaadhoo an island 100 percent powered through solar. It is something residents of Vaadhoo have also begun now very innovatively. The island’s residents are very innovative at things like this,” the President said.
“Hence, we decided to designate this island as a model island, and to ensure the island is fully powered through solar energy by the end of the year.”
The President also mentioned that the project is now ready to be awarded to a contractor, which is a huge step forward!
“It is something we eagerly look forward to to consider this as a model, a pilot project, and transfer other islands, too, to solar power completely.”
This initiative is part of a larger presidential pledge to generate 33 percent of the Maldives’ energy through renewable sources by the end of 2028. The goal is to decrease the country’s dependence on oil, which is a big deal for an island nation.

To achieve this ambitious goal, the government also has plans to implement a major renewable energy project in the Greater Male’ Area. The ‘Floating Solar’ project, planned for a lagoon in Male’ atoll, is expected to generate 100 to 150 mW of solar energy. The government announced that they were seeking contractors for this project back in March.
This project is a game-changer for the Maldives and could set a powerful example for other island nations facing similar challenges. By investing in renewable energy, the Maldives is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also creating a more sustainable and resilient future for its citizens. It’s a win-win!
With Vaadhoo leading the way, the Maldives is proving that a transition to renewable energy is not only possible but also a smart move for a brighter, greener future. This initiative is a testament to the power of innovation and the commitment to a sustainable planet.
