Orsted has officially launched the Wind of Hope, a new service operation vessel (SOV) now deployed at its German offshore wind farms in the North Sea. This vessel will play a crucial role in maintaining the company’s fleet of 337 wind turbines, enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.
Following the successful operation of its sister ship, Wind of Change, which has been in service since 2019, the Wind of Hope is the second vessel specifically designed and constructed to meet the unique needs of offshore wind power. Thijs Schless, Operations Manager for Orsted in Norddeich, emphasized the vessel’s capabilities: “With its design and individual technical features, the Wind of Hope is perfectly suited for efficient and sustainable maintenance operations, catering to the needs of our employees.”
Orsted’s expansion in the German North Sea has nearly doubled its installed wind power capacity in recent years. The introduction of the Wind of Hope is vital for maintaining high levels of energy generation in this growing portfolio.
The Wind of Hope measures 84 meters in length and is equipped with a sustainable diesel-electric drive complemented by hybrid support. Additionally, a battery pack enhances its energy efficiency. For safety during maintenance operations, the vessel features a motion-compensated gangway that minimizes the challenges posed by waves, facilitating easier access for personnel.

The ship also incorporates an intelligent dynamic positioning control system, allowing it to maintain its position with a deviation of no more than one meter. This precision is crucial for safe and effective maintenance work.
Designed with the comfort of its crew in mind, the Wind of Hope provides space for 90 cabins, each featuring windows and private bathrooms. The ship includes a canteen that can accommodate 40 people, where meals are freshly prepared. Moreover, it has its own fresh water supply, ensuring that crew members have all they need during their time at sea.
Like the Wind of Change, the Wind of Hope will dock in the port of Emden every two weeks for crew changes and equipment loading, streamlining operations and ensuring ongoing maintenance support.
The launch of the Wind of Hope marks a significant advancement in Orsted’s commitment to offshore wind energy maintenance. With its innovative design and robust capabilities, the vessel is set to enhance operational efficiency and support the company’s growing wind power initiatives in the North Sea.
