New York State Secures 2.3 GW in Renewable Energy Projects

Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced the execution of contracts for 23 large-scale land-based renewable energy projects in New York State, which will deliver over 2.3 gigawatts of clean energy—enough to power more than 700,000 homes. These initiatives are expected to create over 2,500 jobs and generate more than $4.7 billion in private investment, reinforcing the state’s commitment to clean energy development, grid resiliency, and economic growth.

Commitment to Clean Energy

Governor Hochul emphasized New York’s dedication to fostering competitive opportunities for the clean energy industry. She stated, “We are delivering on our commitment to make New York more prosperous by harnessing the benefits of a growing clean energy economy, increasing family-sustaining jobs, and spurring private investment within communities across the state while remaining focused on keeping energy affordable for all New Yorkers.”

The contracts arise from the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) 2023 Tier 1 Renewable Energy Standard solicitation. These projects are projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.3 million metric tons annually, equivalent to removing nearly 350,000 cars from the road. Additionally, they will provide public health benefits by reducing exposure to harmful pollutants and include over $249 million in commitments to disadvantaged communities.

Notable Support and Impact

Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA, remarked, “Today we celebrate 23 more projects that will deliver clean, sustainable energy to our state’s electric grid. New York continues to provide a reliable market for renewable energy projects, and by facilitating responsible development of these projects, we are protecting our natural resources and creating healthier communities.”

The projects will span several regions, including Central New York, the Finger Lakes, Mid-Hudson, Mohawk Valley, North Country, Southern Tier, and Western New York. All projects are expected to be operational by 2028.

Public Service Commission Chair Rory Christian praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of job creation in the clean energy sector. He stated, “The creation of good paying, family-supporting jobs is a key component of our clean energy job market. Kudos to Governor Hochul and her team for making this outstanding job growth a reality.”

A Robust Renewable Energy Pipeline

These projects contribute to New York’s robust pipeline of renewable energy developments, which includes solar arrays, land-based wind, hydroelectric, and offshore wind projects. Collectively, they will deliver over 6.3 gigawatts of clean power to the grid—enough to power 3.7 million New York homes.

New York State’s climate agenda aims for an affordable and just transition to a clean energy economy, focusing on creating family-sustaining jobs and promoting economic growth through green investments. The state is advancing efforts to achieve an emissions-free economy by 2050 across various sectors, including energy, buildings, transportation, and waste.
