Tata Power and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore $4.25 billion in financing for clean energy projects. This agreement was finalized during the ongoing COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, and focuses on expanding renewable energy and developing essential infrastructure.
Key Projects Under Consideration
The MoU will assess funding for several key initiatives, including a 966 MW solar-wind hybrid system, a pumped hydro storage project, and various energy transition efforts aimed at decarbonization. Tata Power plans to leverage this funding to enhance its power distribution networks and invest in advanced battery storage solutions.
Integrating Gender and Climate Actions
A significant aspect of this partnership is the commitment to integrate gender and climate actions into project frameworks. This initiative aims to empower women while promoting sustainable practices, aligning with India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
India’s Energy Transition
This collaboration comes as India intensifies its efforts to move away from fossil fuels. Large-scale projects such as the solar-wind hybrid system and hydro storage solutions are seen as critical for enhancing India’s renewable energy infrastructure and improving energy security.
Importance of Public-Private Partnerships

The MoU underscores the increasing importance of public-private collaborations in meeting global climate goals and fostering sustainable development. Both Tata Power and ADB are expected to finalize project evaluations and funding mechanisms in the coming months, focusing on supporting India’s renewable energy commitments and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Driving Innovation and Sustainability
This partnership is also anticipated to drive innovation and long-term environmental sustainability in India, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to a cleaner energy future.
