Romania’s Ministry of Energy has achieved significant milestones under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), focusing on enhancing battery storage capacities and boosting photovoltaic panel production.
Energy Minister’s Remarks
“Romania has made energy storage the top priority of the national energy system,” stated Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. He highlighted that the newly signed contracts will already fulfill 20% of the country’s storage needs. Additionally, the allocation of 33 million euros in non-refundable funds for a photovoltaic panel factory in Bârlad marks a vital step toward revitalizing Romanian industry amid the energy transition.
Project Details
The five newly signed projects will collectively add 791.48 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage capacity, supported by over 30 million euros in non-reimbursable funding from the PNRR. Minister Burduja emphasized the importance of these investments in ensuring that the energy system can handle peak demand, which is crucial for maintaining system stability while maximizing the use of green energy from solar and wind sources.
Benefits of Energy Storage

“Ensuring that the energy system can handle peak demand is essential for maintaining system stability and for using green energy from solar and wind farms, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing,” added the Minister. As Romania increases its reliance on renewable and intermittent energy production, the need for efficient storage solutions will grow. These investments are expected to lead to lower energy bills for Romanian households and businesses in the coming years.
Conclusion
With these developments, Romania is positioning itself as a leader in energy storage and solar technology, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.
