Sarawak is actively exploring Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology as a means to generate renewable energy, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. During a press conference following the Sarawak Sustainability Insights (SSM) 2024 conference, he highlighted the potential of OTEC to harness the temperature differences between warmer surface seawater and cooler, deeper waters to produce power.
Key Points from the Announcement:
- Relevance to Tropical Regions: OTEC is particularly suitable for tropical areas like Sarawak, where high temperatures and favorable oceanic conditions exist. The geographical positioning along a continental shelf provides unique advantages for generating ocean-based energy.
- Complementing Existing Initiatives: Abang Johari noted that while OTEC is a new venture for Sarawak, it could complement other renewable energy initiatives, such as wave kinetic energy, enhancing the state’s overall renewable energy portfolio.
- Potential for Regional Energy Sharing: If the OTEC project proves viable, Sarawak could not only generate green, renewable energy but also share surplus energy with neighboring countries, contributing to regional energy security.
- Preliminary Research Phase: The state is currently in the preliminary research phase, with studies expected to take up to one and a half years. Abang Johari expressed confidence in the favorable conditions for this venture, particularly offshore near Miri, where the coastal landscape and geological conditions are conducive to OTEC implementation.
- Ideal Locations: The seas off Miri, including areas in Balingian and Mukah, have been identified as geographically ideal for OTEC due to their depth and thermal conditions, which align well with the requirements for energy generation.

This initiative reflects Sarawak’s commitment to diversifying its renewable energy sources and advancing towards a sustainable energy future.
