1. Focus on the task
Atanmo’s mission is to “prove that you can have an expensive imagination if you have an affordable hustle to fund it and a constant quest to fuel it, and the endless passion to grow it.” She said she aims to empower, educate, and entertain others through the gift of travel and the many lessons I gave her.
How did you start traveling?
Focusing on this mission, she published her first book, From Excuses to Trips: How She Started Traveling the World, where she shares all her tips for being able to travel the world. She commented, “Before I started traveling, I used to spend my disposable income on going out, eating out, and using fuel for my car. So, I stopped partying, cooked all my meals, and walked to work.”
2. Taking risks during trips and travel is your way to be a travel blogger
Rarely do you hear success stories that don’t involve a certain level of risk? Atanmo was raised by Nigerian parents and shared that in Nigerian culture, “You are a doctor or a lawyer or without a proper job” whatever your job would fall into the third category, I thought of making the most of it.
After her graduation, she traveled to London on a one-way ticket with only $500 in her bank account and she has many dreams. Her idea at the time was to take on any odd job she could get. With the small sums she was making, he kept it going.
3. Be confident in yourself to become a persuasive travel blogger
Atanmo shared, “The first thing that shocked her, is how easy it is to make money once you start believing in yourself.” She said her trade guru once told her, “You’re one step away, you’re there, you can do it.” This voice of confidence and positivity helped guide her. After doubting whether she was doing everything right, she finally started to gain confidence. She started seeing people understand her passion and this also helped her in her journey.
4. Be authentic to yourself to become a trusted travel blogger
One of Atanmo’s biggest tips he shared was to “stay true to your voice and don’t change or get caught up in anything else.” Atanmo prides itself on being consistently authentic when sharing its experiences with its followers. For example, it continues to share content about black-friendly travel and covers topics such as how black travelers experience traveling abroad.
She has gained traffic on her blog from writing about topics that are frequently searched for on Google, such as countries that love blacks, countries that are safer for blacks, and countries that are least racist for blacks. She participates in these posts that try to “encourage dialogue when it comes to racial and cultural clashes abroad that almost no one wants to talk about. It’s uncomfortable for some, which makes discussion necessary.”
5. Learn to make a difference
Anyone who feels that what they do makes a difference, no matter how small or big, will feel greater satisfaction and greater reward. For Atanmo, I asked her how she is making a difference in the world, and she said, “I feel like I am making a difference by amplifying the voices of black women in the travel industry. Too often, the media and the public by default only see travelers as one demographic of white, wealthy, and thin people.
Learn how to develop your narration and story style
I like to develop the narrative of what the traveler looks like in my style that is loud, lively, and slightly obnoxious both acoustically and visually. I bring literal color to the world of travel and feel even more satisfied when I receive an email or message from young women of color saying I’m the reason they got a passport and/or booked their first solo vacation abroad. The black community is often the last group to be marketed, especially when it comes to travel. So instead of screaming for a seat at the table, I pull up my chair and invite myself anyway!
6. Follow your passion and write what you love
Atanmo said she did not view travel blogging as a way to earn a revenue stream or build a business at first. For her, blogging has always been something she loved. She also shared that she has a lot of variety in what she does every day. Nowadays, Atanmo wears many hats including video editing, graphic design, blogging, and public speaking. She said she enjoys the creative outlet that this work gives her every day, an opportunity to creatively share her true voice via social media, video, and photos.
7. Be purposeful
Atanmo has already published a book and spoken at conferences on topics such as pursuing your passion for a salary. I asked her where she expects her brand to grow in the next five to 10 years, and she said she’s open to knowing where she takes it. She explained that one of her short-term goals is to start a scholarship fund for black women to study abroad, to help someone take the first step in seeing the world. Some of the long-term goals she shares are to write another book, do more public speaking, and be a mentor to college students. She also has some big ideas she’s working on right now including meeting siblings around the world.
8. Stay focused
Like many, Atanmo has gone through ups and downs in her journey and has shared it all with her followers as she went. Throughout her journey, she has remained focused and determined. She said, “If you do something long enough, people will notice, it’s only a matter of time.”
9. Be inspired
Atanmo said she finds inspiration through her Instagram followers, “because they are so passionate and loyal and make my work easy and fun to show my work every day. They are like an army of fans rooted just in my every move and I am so grateful for their support.” You also find her through communities including the Black Travel Movement and Girls Love Travel groups on Facebook.
10. Keep learning
When I asked Atanmo for her advice to others looking to navigate this world, she said she learns a lot through people, specifically her mentor, friends, followers, and podcast. Early on, Atanmo was fortunate to have a business advisor help guide her. She also regularly listens to several podcasts that she recommends, including The Tim Ferriss Show, Oprah’s SuperSoul Talks, Random Rants with Luvvie Ajayi, The Tony Robbins Podcast, and Lewis Howes “School of Greatness”. In addition to her mentor and these podcasts, she has focused Atanmo also focused on surrounding yourself with like-minded people. She said taking advantage of her network to find guidance through those who can help has always been helpful.
Atanmo also takes the time and is open to soliciting feedback from its network and the public. When you’re having a conversation with a new client, you’ll ask “How did you find me, and what made you want to connect with me?” By asking this question, she can better understand its impact.
Overall, I would recommend aspiring entrepreneurs in the travel world to take Atanmo’s tips for getting started. She summed up her advice well: “There is no single blueprint you can follow that will guide your entrepreneurship journey according to your circumstances, struggles, and budget but you can seek help from mentors, use your degree from Google University and simply put your head down and hustle.
