Vindr Wins Auction for Wind Park Development in Latvia’s Augšdaugava Region

Nordic renewable energy developer Vindr has recently been announced as one of the winners in the auction organized by the Latvian State Forests (LVM). This victory grants Vindr the rights to develop wind parks within LVM territories in the Augšdaugava region, marking a significant advancement in Latvia’s renewable energy sector.

The Importance of Renewable Energy in Latvia

“Renewable energy production in Latvia not only reduces electricity prices throughout the region but also strengthens the country’s energy independence,” stated Dmitrijs Guzs, the company’s business development manager in Latvia. “Additionally, it promotes overall public welfare” [1].

Historically, wind energy parks have been primarily developed in the western part of Latvia. Vindr’s new project in the Latgale region—specifically in the Augšdaugava district—will enable the company to fulfill its commitment to sustainable investments in the local community and promote balanced economic development.

Project Scope and Environmental Considerations

Vindr secured the rights to develop a wind park covering an area of 3,000 hectares on LVM territory. Before construction begins, a series of environmental impact assessments and technical studies must be performed, alongside extensive coordination with state and municipal institutions [1].

Mārtiņš Vonda, Vindr’s commercial director, expressed enthusiasm about the auction win: “This brings Vindr closer to our strategic goal of becoming a leading renewable energy producer in Northern Europe. Given the pressing need to promote renewable energy production in Latvia and the European Union, we are eager to collaborate effectively with local and state institutions to ensure rapid project development” [1].

Vindr’s Expanding Presence in the Baltic Region

Since its inception in 2019, Vindr has been actively developing renewable energy projects in Norway and Sweden, and it is expanding its operations in Estonia, where it plans to invest €300 million in various projects by 2030. The company’s subsidiary, Alsun Energy, is currently developing large-scale solar power plants in the Kuldīga region of Latvia [1].

Vindr is also implementing wind energy projects in the Nordic countries and the Baltics, including the 175MW Bjorkvattnet wind farm in Jämtland, Sweden. Currently, Vindr manages 72 solar and wind energy projects across four countries, boasting a total capacity of 15.8GW. By 2030, the group plans to invest €1.3 billion in further development [2].
