Valparaiso Community Schools (VCS) has completed the first phase of a district-wide project focused on saving energy, cutting operational costs, and promoting sustainable practices. This initiative is expected to save VCS $7.6 million over the next 12 years, with those savings reinvested into classrooms and programs that benefit students.
Key Features of the Energy Efficiency Project
The first phase of the project includes the installation of:
- Solar Energy Systems: VCS has added 500 kWac of solar power through rooftop and carport installations, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
- LED Lighting: New LED lights have been installed in various district buildings, cutting down on energy use while improving visibility.
- High-Performance HVAC Systems: High-efficiency boilers have been implemented to enhance air quality and maintain a comfortable temperature in classrooms, all while saving energy.
- Utility Meter Dashboard: A new system allows real-time monitoring of electricity, gas, and water usage, helping VCS make smarter decisions on energy consumption.
Financial Framework
This project was made possible through a Guaranteed Energy Savings Contract (GESC), ensuring no additional taxpayer dollars were needed. VCS partnered with Stratelign, an energy advisory firm, to guide the project from its early stages, while the upgrades were carried out by Veregy, a leading energy solutions provider. Thanks to federal incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, the district will receive additional financial benefits, making the project even more cost-effective.
Community Impact
Dr. Jim McCall, Superintendent of Valparaiso Community Schools, stated, “At Valparaiso Community Schools, we are always looking for innovative ways to enhance our educational environment while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. This energy savings initiative is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and our dedication to providing the best possible experience for our students and staff.”
Bob McKinney, Founder and Managing Partner of Stratelign, commented, “This project exemplifies how innovative energy solutions can reduce operational costs and benefit students and staff alike. We’re honored to collaborate with Valparaiso Community Schools and Veregy to create lasting, meaningful change for the community.”
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

To celebrate this achievement, VCS will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 23, 2024, at 9:00 AM in the parking lot at 1700 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso. The event will showcase the solar canopies and provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about the district’s sustainability efforts.
Conclusion
VCS’s commitment to sustainability and efficient resource use sets a positive example for other schools. Dr. McCall emphasized, “This energy savings initiative is an important step in ensuring that our district continues to thrive in a way that is both economically and environmentally responsible.”
