University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) has been awarded £1.2 million to enhance energy efficiency through renewable energy projects. This funding, part of a broader initiative by the UK government, aims to implement solar power systems and a battery storage solution at Derriford Hospital, alongside the installation of 2,200 LED lights across various hospital properties.
UHP estimates that these initiatives will significantly reduce energy consumption, equivalent to the annual power usage of approximately 435 households. This project is part of a larger funding package of £100 million from Great British Energy, designed to support 78 NHS trusts in their efforts to install solar power and battery storage systems, ultimately reducing energy costs.
Sarah Brampton, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Finance Officer at UHP, highlighted the pressing need for energy efficiency in healthcare settings. “When you consider heating, lighting, all of the specialist equipment, theatres, and 10,000 staff, it goes without saying that the energy consumption and costs across our estates are significant,” she stated.
The grant aligns with UHP’s Green Plan, which aims to increase onsite renewable energy sources and enhance overall sustainability across its facilities by 2032. The installation of solar panels and LED lighting is expected to play a crucial role in achieving these goals.
The move towards renewable energy in the NHS comes at a critical time. According to the NHS Sustainability Development Unit, the health service is responsible for approximately 4% of England’s carbon emissions. By investing in renewable technologies, hospitals not only aim to reduce their carbon footprint but also alleviate the financial burden of rising energy bills.
The £1.2 million grant awarded to University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust marks a significant step toward a greener future for healthcare in the region. As UHP moves forward with these energy efficiency projects, it sets a precedent for other trusts to follow, contributing to the NHS’s broader commitment to sustainability and cost reduction.
