Newcastle, NSW — Major road upgrades are on the horizon for Newcastle as part of the New South Wales Government’s Port to Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) program. With a significant investment of $128 million, the first stage of infrastructure enhancements aims to reduce travel delays, ease congestion, and improve road safety.
Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp emphasized the importance of these upgrades for the state’s transition to renewable energy. “The Port of Newcastle is the mouth that feeds the state’s transition to renewable energy,” he stated. “We couldn’t be prouder to play this vital role in transporting components, but it’s important that our roads are up to the task.”
The infrastructure improvements will facilitate the safe transport of oversized equipment necessary for building renewable energy projects. This initiative is not only a win for local motorists but also enhances conditions for freight operators, making travel more efficient.
The program will focus on key routes connecting the Port of Newcastle to regional NSW, unlocking access to the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone. The upgrades will include:
- Pavement widening
- Drainage adjustments
- New turning lanes
- Utility relocations
Specific locations targeted for upgrades include Quayside Close, the Selwyn Street and George Street intersection, and Industrial Drive at the Pacific Highway in Mayfield and Mayfield North.

The project is expected to create approximately 60 jobs during construction, with many sections scheduled for completion later this year. Australian firm BMD Constructions Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract, with construction set to commence in the coming weeks.
The Port to REZ program will continue to explore further upgrades across New South Wales, reinforcing the region’s commitment to renewable energy and improved transport infrastructure. Crakanthorp noted the broader benefits: “These upgrades mean safer roads for Novocastrians and more efficient travel all around.”
The upcoming road enhancements in Newcastle represent a significant investment in both local infrastructure and the renewable energy sector. By improving key transport routes, the NSW Government is not only facilitating the state’s transition to sustainable energy but also ensuring safer and more efficient travel for all road users.
