Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) has officially received approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) to develop a 20-megawatt (MW) solar array and a 40-MW battery storage system in Fitchburg. Announced on May 7, the Sunnyside Solar Energy Center is set to enhance the local energy landscape by supplying renewable energy to MGE’s distribution system.
Fitchburg’s Mayor Julia Arata-Fratta expressed her support for the project, emphasizing the city’s commitment to sustainability. “As a sustainable community that believes that climate change is real, investing in renewable energy is great for the city,” she stated in an email to the Star.
MGE’s Chairman, President, and CEO Jeff Keebler echoed this sentiment, saying, “MGE shares with our customers the goal of a more sustainable energy future.” He highlighted that the Sunnyside Solar Energy Center is a vital step forward in reducing carbon emissions and increasing the use of locally generated renewable energy.
The Sunnyside Solar Energy Center will be situated off Whalen Road in Fitchburg. The solar array is anticipated to generate enough electricity annually to power approximately 6,000 households. Additionally, the 40 MW battery storage system will provide critical energy during peak demand times and when solar generation is low.
EDF Renewables is the developer behind this project, which is expected to begin serving customers by 2026, with the battery storage system coming online in 2027. This timeline aligns with MGE’s ongoing efforts to enhance energy efficiency and electrification within the community.
This initiative not only aims to provide clean energy but also contributes to MGE’s broader sustainability goals. The integration of renewable energy sources is part of the utility’s commitment to creating a more sustainable energy future for its customers.

As cities across the U.S. strive to combat climate change, projects like the Sunnyside Solar Energy Center illustrate the potential of local renewable energy solutions. By investing in solar energy and battery storage, MGE is taking significant steps to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote a cleaner, greener future for Wisconsin.
With the approval of the Sunnyside Solar Energy Center, Madison Gas and Electric is poised to make a lasting impact on the local energy landscape. As the project progresses, it will not only provide renewable energy but also serve as a model for other communities aiming to embrace sustainable practices and combat climate change.
