Le Havre, France — Lhyfe has announced that the French Prime Minister has officially signed a grant of €149 million for its upcoming green hydrogen production plant near the Grand Canal of Le Havre. This project marks a significant milestone, as it will push Lhyfe’s installed electrolysis capacity beyond 100 MW.
The Green Horizon project aims to produce up to 34 tonnes of green hydrogen per day in Normandy, one of Europe’s largest industrial port regions. This initiative was selected by the European Commission in 2022 as part of the third wave of IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) focused on hydrogen.
In March 2024, during a visit to Le Havre, the French government announced the grant through Roland Lescure, the then Minister Delegate for Industry and Energy. The funding will support the development of the plant, which is anticipated to be operational by 2029.
The agreement with Bpifrance outlines the terms for the public funding. Lhyfe will receive an initial advance of €18 million by June 2025, which will help cover investments made since 2022 and facilitate the next phases of the project. Subsequent payments will be contingent upon the successful achievement of specified milestones over a four-year period.
The hydrogen production site will be located on a 2.8-hectare plot in Gonfreville-l’Orcher, adjacent to the Yara site, which is committed to decarbonization through the use of green hydrogen. This project aligns with France’s broader energy transition goals and contributes to the EU’s strategy for sustainable energy.

Lhyfe has already submitted the necessary building permit and environmental authorization requests for the plant. Additionally, the company has secured grid connection and ensured the availability of required power for the project.
Industry experts view this initiative as a critical step in advancing France’s hydrogen economy. According to recent reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA), hydrogen is projected to play a pivotal role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Lhyfe’s investment in green hydrogen aligns with global trends toward sustainable energy solutions.
The grant awarded to Lhyfe represents a significant investment in green hydrogen production, reinforcing France’s commitment to renewable energy and decarbonization efforts. As the project progresses, it is expected to contribute to the country’s energy independence and sustainability goals.
