Karnataka Aims for 43.33% Renewable Energy by 2029-30

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has proposed new renewable energy targets for the state, aiming to achieve 43.33% of total energy consumption from renewable sources by 2029-30. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the state’s renewable energy capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Key Details of the Proposal

  • Initial Target: The proposal sets a starting target of 29.91% for the fiscal year 2024-25.
  • Sub-Targets: Specific sub-targets will be established for various renewable energy sources, including wind, hydro, and distributed generation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The draft is open for stakeholder comments until November 27, 2024.

Compliance Requirements

  • Distribution Licensees: Each distribution licensee must acquire a minimum percentage of their total energy consumption from renewable sources.
  • HRECS Compliance: Hukkeri Rural Electric Co-operative Society (HRECS) and deemed licensees that purchase bulk power from an electricity supply company (ESCOM) will be compliant with RPO if the ESCOM meets its own RPO targets.
  • Captive and Open Access Consumers: These consumers must also source a portion of their energy from renewable sources, calculated based on their total non-fossil energy consumption.

Alignment with National Goals

"Karnataka sets ambitious targets for renewable energy, striving for 43.33% consumption by 2029-30."
“Karnataka sets ambitious targets for renewable energy, striving for 43.33% consumption by 2029-30.”

These proposed amendments align with the Government of India’s notification on minimum consumption shares from non-fossil sources. If implemented, the new regulations will significantly impact Karnataka’s renewable energy landscape, pushing for a higher share of clean energy in the state’s power mix.

In addition, KERC has introduced the KERC (Implementation of Peer-to-Peer Solar Energy Transaction) Regulations, 2024 to promote renewable energy and innovative technologies, further supporting the transition to net-zero emissions by 2040.
