sense of responsibility

How do I build a sense of responsibility?

We are often asked to take full responsibility for our lives or to become more responsible, and you may be asking yourself why this is so important. In fact, it’s fantastic; being responsible means moving from the victim role to the top of the success ladder. And when you accept responsibility for your life, you acknowledge that you are the one who creates it rather than being a victim of the circumstances that surround him.You simply become the leader of your life!

Many people live in a state of despair and frustration due to their inability to control their lives, so everything collapses in front of them without them being able to change anything. Being in such a situation does not mean that these people are wronged or victims of the present circumstances; on the contrary, they simply abuse their responsibility, leading themselves to destruction.

If you are one of those people who don’t live as they truly wish, it’s time to start changing, take ownership, and become 100% responsible for your success. Fortunately, responsibility is an acquired skill, just like any other skill, and it can be developed and strengthened through training and exercise.

1- Accept your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions.

The first step is to take responsibility for your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. These elements build your experience in life. You create your life through what you think, what you say, and what you do. Let’s take an example that illustrates it better: Suppose you are unemployed and you want to get a job, yet you believe and believe deeply that the country in which you live is suffering from great economic problems, which makes it impossible to get a job in it. Based on your ideas, you make no effort to search, you do not write a professional resume, you do not try to browse recruitment sites, you do not seek to expand your network of acquaintances by attending job fairs or workshops, and you do not even think about browsing the names of companies in your country that work in your field of specialization.

Not only that, even when someone tells you that such-and-such company is looking for employees, the first thing that comes to your mind is that the salaries will be low, you may not work in your specialty, and perhaps someone from the hiring manager’s acquaintances will be appointed! Do you think that this way you might get a job one day? Most likely, this will be impossible, not because the conditions in your country are difficult or because you are unqualified, but because with your thoughts you put obstacles in your way and shackle yourself; you create your bitter reality with your thoughts.

You will become responsible for your life the moment you accept this fact, that you are the cause of what happens to you, and when you are responsible for the bad things that happen to you, it will be very easy to change the tide and become responsible for achieving success.Accept the fact that the thoughts in your head are your thoughts, and the actions you take are actions of your will alone; you are the only decision-maker regarding your life.

2- Stop blaming others.

To become truly responsible, you must first let go of the victim role. Stop blaming your partner, your parents, your country’s economy, or even your pet for your misfortune. The moment you stop this bad habit, you will immediately step out of the victim role and become the decision-maker. In this moment, you can change things around you. Every time you feel like you are about to blame someone, stop and ask yourself, “What did I do that caused this to happen to me?”

3-Stop whining.

Complaining is another type of blame, but it is often not directed at a specific person or entity. Like blaming, it makes you a victim of circumstances. Not only that, but it also pushes you to think about all the shortcomings and things that are not going as they should, which makes you feel more frustrated and despairing and gets you into a vicious circle of inevitable negative thoughts. Every time you are about to start whining and complaining, try the following:

  • Remain silent for a moment and try to think about the future. Ask yourself: Will this complaint of yours matter in a few days, a month, or a year?
  • Stay away from negative situations and negative people who complain, and mingle more with positive groups.
  • If you have to complain about a certain thing, try to add a positive sentence before and after your complaint.
  • Avoid complaining and whining on social media and instead try to share your feelings with a close friend or by writing them in your diary.

4- Don’t take situations personally.

Don’t think that the entire universe revolves around you alone. Do not think that any disagreement or divergence of opinions is a personal attack on you. Always remember that you do not have control over others or their reactions, but you can control your own completely. In order not to take any situation that happens to you personally, try the following:

  • Instead of making assumptions, ask questions of the other party if you believe he is addressing you personally with his words and speech.
  • In any disagreement, ask yourself, “Does it have anything to do with me as a person or with the issue we have before us?”
  • Ignore bad situations and look at them as a lesson for you instead of thinking about them for a long time.
  • When someone mistreats or underestimates you, avoid responding to him in kind and seek instead to show your worth and class to him.

5- Achieve your own happiness.

In other words, take responsibility for achieving your happiness and do not wait for anyone to do it for you, no matter what. Above all, remember that happiness comes from within and never from without. It is not the responsibility of your parents, friends, or children, but yours alone. Make the decision to be happy now and in this moment, and do what only makes you happy. You can start achieving happiness for yourself through some of the following:

  • Keep a gratitude journal and write down at least three things you are grateful for every day.
  • Do what you love: listen to your favorite music, watch a movie you love, take a walk in a nearby park, or buy yourself a gift from time to time.
  • Help others, and do at least one charitable act every day. You do not have to volunteer for an association or do a great thing. Just helping an old man cross the street, smiling at the cleaner, or exchanging greetings with the seller in a store is enough to bring happiness to others and thus make you feel happy too.

6- Focus on the present moment.

Take charge of your time, and remember that the only real moment is the present moment: “now.” The past is gone, and the future is yet to come. Don’t dwell on thinking about what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow, and make sure to live in the present moment as it is, enjoy it as much as possible, and achieve the greatest amount of achievement in it.

7- Set a goal and make your choices accordingly.

You have the power of choice. In fact, you choose and make decisions all day long. Tea or coffee, a red shirt or a black shirt, exercise or lounging at home—you always choose, and even when you don’t choose, you actually make a decision not to choose anything! Always make sure you connect this ability to your larger goal. Suppose, for example, that your greatest ambition is to become a famous writer. Every time you stand at a crossroads and have to choose, ask yourself: “Which of the two things will serve me to achieve my goal of becoming a writer?” Make this question a habit for you, and you will find that your decisions have become better with the passage of time and that you have become more in control of your life.

8- Build your confidence

Confidence and responsibility are two things that are closely related to each other and complement each other. When you are confident in yourself, you will see in yourself a person who is able to make the right decisions about your life, which develops your sense of responsibility, and the more this sense grows, the more confident you are in yourself. You can boost your confidence by persevering in doing the following:

  • Reward yourself for your accomplishments, and don’t underestimate what you do.
  • Avoid self-flagellation.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others.
  • Take care of yourself on the inside (by eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep) and outside (by taking care of your appearance, wearing comfortable clothes, and taking care of your personal hygiene).
  • Read books and watch programs on the topic of self-confidence.
  • Pay attention to your body language, and practice the right strength postures and body language that boost your confidence.

9- Start with real, practical steps to become more responsible.

After you have accepted the fact that your thoughts, feelings, and life are your responsibility alone and after you have followed all the previous steps, it is time to start implementing and applying the matter to your daily life, where you can do simple things that will make you a responsible person in the long run, such as the following:

  • Arrange any mess you cause yourself and do not leave it to anyone else. If you use a plate or cup in the kitchen, clean it alone and do not leave it to your mother or your roommate. If you make a mess in your office, arrange it and do not leave it to the worker responsible for cleaning.
  • Control your financial affairs: set a budget for yourself and divide your expenses in a way that is commensurate with your income and allows you to save part of it.
  • Accomplish some tasks without being asked to do them, such as throwing garbage at home, finishing writing a report at work before your manager asks you to, or fixing a minor malfunction in the office…
  • Apologize for your mistakes and take the initiative to fix them instead of feeling angry and evading them or justifying why they were committed.
  • Do not hesitate to ask your boss to assign you some additional tasks that help you develop yourself, and make sure to complete them in a timely manner in addition to your main tasks, as this will raise your self-confidence and make you more responsible in the eyes of your managers, which contributes to the development of your career and advances you to higher ranks.
