Greece Strengthens Energy Position Amid Geopolitical Shifts

Greece is making significant strides in the energy sector, positioning itself as a key player in the Eastern Mediterranean. The country is not only seeking economic benefits but also aiming to boost its geopolitical significance in the region.

During a recent visit to the United States, Greek Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou engaged in talks with energy giants Chevron and ExxonMobil at their headquarters in Houston. The discussions focused on the Eastern Mediterranean’s energy potential and Greece’s pivotal role in harnessing this opportunity.

Accompanied by Deputy Minister Nikos Tsafos and Hellenic Hydrocarbon Management Company CEO Aristofanis Stefatos, Papastavrou emphasized that hydrocarbon development is a national priority. He expressed Greece’s commitment to finalize concession procedures by the end of 2025 and urged both companies to expedite their hydrocarbon exploration activities, particularly in areas south of Crete and the Peloponnese.

The Greek delegation also visited Cheniere, the largest LNG producer in the US, to discuss Greece’s role in importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US to Europe. Cheniere has been a key player in LNG exports to Europe, especially in light of the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.

Given the current geopolitical climate, Greece is well-positioned to exploit its natural resources and leverage its geographic location as a crucial entry point into European markets. “The signs and projections indicate a willingness from these companies to move forward,” Papastavrou noted, reflecting optimism about future investments.

Following his discussions in the US, Papastavrou plans to meet with officials in Israel to explore regional energy cooperation. This trip highlights Greece’s strategic partnerships in the region, which are essential for enhancing energy security.

Moreover, Athens is strengthening its ties with Cairo. The recent visit of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Greece and the discussions at the first Greece-Egypt High Council for Cooperation demonstrate the commitment of both nations to collaborate on energy and other sectors.
