Century Lithium is making significant strides at its Angel Island project in Nevada, with recent test results indicating that their lithium extraction process is exceeding expectations. The company has been operating a full-scale test facility, known as the Demonstration Plant, to explore innovative methods for extracting lithium from clay-rich deposits near Silver Peak.
In collaboration with Amalgamated Research, LLC (ARi), Century Lithium upgraded its Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) method. Between November 2024 and January 2025, tests revealed that the system successfully recovered over 91% of lithium from the test material, significantly surpassing typical industry averages. This impressive recovery rate not only highlights the effectiveness of their method but also promises to enhance the overall quality of the lithium produced.
One of the standout features of this improved extraction process is its ability to reduce unwanted elements like sodium. This reduction contributes to a purer final product, making it easier to refine into battery-grade lithium. The Demonstration Plant has already produced lithium carbonate with an impressive 99.87% purity, which is nearly ideal for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Additionally, Century Lithium has been utilizing special membranes to concentrate the lithium further after extraction. This enhancement could lead to reduced energy and chemical requirements in subsequent processing steps, promising a more sustainable approach to lithium production.
The advancements made at the Angel Island project could significantly lower the costs associated with lithium production in the United States. Century Lithium anticipates that the enhanced extraction process will decrease the need for extensive equipment and chemicals, ultimately making the project more economical to build and operate over time.

Currently, the company is testing whether its high-purity lithium carbonate can be utilized in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are essential for EVs and renewable energy storage solutions. Moreover, Century Lithium is investigating new methods for treating local clay that could minimize acid usage during extraction, which would be beneficial for both cost and environmental impact.
