Alliant Energy Launches Iowa’s Largest Solar Facility

Alliant Energy has officially launched its 200-megawatt (MW) solar facility in Linn County, now named Pleasant Creek Solar. This project is a significant milestone for Iowa, as it represents the largest solar installation in the state, generating enough electricity to power approximately 40,000 homes each year.

Previously known as Duane Arnold Solar during its development and construction phases, the facility is now operational and contributing to Iowa’s renewable energy landscape. With this new solar project, Alliant Energy has increased its solar energy capacity to a total of 400 MW, following the successful launch of the Creston and Wever solar projects in 2024. These initiatives complement Alliant Energy’s existing portfolio of around 1,300 MW of wind resources in Iowa, showcasing the company’s diverse energy strategy.

Mayuri Farlinger, president of Alliant Energy’s Iowa energy company, emphasized the project’s role in the “all of the above” energy strategy. “Pleasant Creek Solar exemplifies our strategy, resulting in cost-effective energy resources that increase reliability for customers,” Farlinger stated. She highlighted how these solar projects not only provide renewable energy but also drive economic growth by attracting businesses, creating jobs, and boosting local tax revenues.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, solar energy installations have been a key driver of job creation in the renewable sector. In 2022, the solar industry employed over 250,000 workers in the U.S., a number that continues to grow as more projects come online.

The name Pleasant Creek Solar pays tribute to Pleasant Creek Lake, a nearby man-made lake that was created when the Duane Arnold Energy Center was built. This lake served as an emergency water source for the former generating plant, linking the solar facility to the region’s energy history.

Pleasant Creek Solar in Linn County is now operational, providing clean energy to power 40,000 homes annually.

The project was developed by Duane Arnold Solar LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources LLC, and was constructed in two phases. The first 50 MW began operating in March 2024, followed by the remaining 150 MW, which came online in December 2024.

Farlinger expressed gratitude for the collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources, local officials, and landowners, stating, “We appreciate the partnership to help us continue delivering safe, reliable energy to benefit our customers and the communities we serve.” This project is another step in Alliant Energy’s mission to enhance energy reliability and foster community development.
