A wave of investor enthusiasm is invigorating the clean energy sector as startups affiliated with Aberdeen’s Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) have successfully raised £150 million in private funding. This investment is empowering innovative solutions across renewable energy, hydrogen advancements, and carbon capture technologies.
The NZTC, a not-for-profit organization, has been vital in nurturing over 80 pioneering companies, generating £36 million in revenues and creating more than 1,500 jobs since its establishment. Its TechX Accelerator program, launched in 2017, has invested £7 million, leading to a remarkable 20-fold increase in private equity investment.
These impressive funding figures were revealed at Aberdeen’s inaugural Net Zero Innovators Conference, which drew nearly 500 attendees eager to explore the latest advancements in clean energy. Startups had the opportunity to present their technologies to investors and industry leaders, paving the way for the scaling of next-generation energy solutions.
The conference spotlighted several disruptive technologies that are set to transform offshore and renewable energy sectors:
- HonuWorx: Creating crewless submarines aimed at reducing offshore emissions by up to 30 tonnes daily.
- ACUA Ocean: Developing the world’s first hydrogen-powered surface vessel for offshore monitoring, setting a new standard for sustainability in maritime operations.
- Frontier Robotics: Improving marine robotics to enhance maintenance efficiency for offshore wind farms.
- Wastewater Fuels: Converting wastewater into green hydrogen, tapping into a previously overlooked resource for clean energy.
- Myriad Wind: Innovating multi-rotor wind turbines that promise enhanced safety, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance.
Mark Anderson, the NZTC’s Chief Acceleration Officer, remarked on the growing momentum within the clean energy startup ecosystem. “This funding reflects a significant shift toward investing in sustainable technologies,” he stated. “The £150 million raised through our TechX Accelerator program illustrates the value of our support for clean energy innovators.”

The conference was not merely a platform for discussions; it featured panels on decarbonization strategies and a targeted roundtable aimed at unlocking further investments in energy tech innovation. A competitive “pitch battle” allowed TechX startups to showcase their transformative solutions to potential investors and industry stakeholders.
Anderson emphasized the critical role of connecting innovative startups with established industry players who can help bring their technologies to market. “Facilitating these connections accelerates the development of groundbreaking technologies, ensuring their deployment can make a substantial impact in the energy transition,” he noted.
He also praised Aberdeen’s role in advancing the energy innovation agenda, highlighting the importance of partnerships in driving growth, creating jobs, and building a sustainable economy across the UK.
The £150 million raised by clean energy startups in Aberdeen represents a transformative moment in the pursuit of sustainable solutions. With ongoing investment and collaboration, the region is set to lead the charge in the global transition to a cleaner energy future.
