Construction has officially commenced on SSE Renewables’ inaugural onshore wind farm project in Italy. The Puglia project, boasting a capacity of 17.3 megawatts (MW), is strategically located across two sites in the southern region of Puglia—Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva.
This ambitious project will feature five Siemens Gamesa 132-3.4 MW onshore wind turbines. Early construction activities focus on building the necessary foundations and enabling works for site access. Following these initial phases, the installation of the turbines will begin, marking a significant milestone in Italy’s renewable energy landscape.
The Italian construction firm Idoka Construzioni has been appointed as the principal contractor for this initiative. The project is anticipated to create approximately 70 construction jobs at its peak, providing a boost to the local economy.
Gianluca Mercurio, SSE Renewables’ Country Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress. “It’s fantastic to have construction underway on our Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm sites in Puglia, our first project in Italy,” he stated. Mercurio emphasized the project’s significance, noting, “The wind farm will play a part in helping Italy and the Puglia region reach climate targets, strengthening energy security and generating homegrown renewable energy.”

Italy has set ambitious climate goals, aiming to achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as part of its broader commitment to the European Green Deal. The Puglia wind farm is a crucial step toward meeting these targets, providing clean energy and contributing to a sustainable future.
The commencement of construction on SSE Renewables’ Puglia wind farm represents a pivotal moment in Italy’s transition to renewable energy. As the project progresses, it underscores the importance of local partnerships and job creation while contributing to the country’s climate objectives.
