UK-based renewable energy developer RES has received approval from the Highland Council to construct a 45-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scotland, located next to the Alness substation.
In a press release, the company stated, “The consented facility will play an important role in supporting the variable generation of renewable energy technologies.” This project, named the Contullich Energy Storage System, will be situated approximately 1 kilometer (0.621 miles) northwest of Alness. Initial estimates suggest that construction will take around 12 months.
RES’s Commitment to Energy Storage

RES has a proven track record, having developed over 830 MW of energy storage projects across the UK and Ireland. This new facility will enhance the stability and reliability of renewable energy sources in the region.
Upcoming Projects
Earlier this week, RES also announced the launch of a second round of consultation for its proposed Steeple Renewables Project. This initiative, which combines solar power and battery storage in Nottinghamshire, has a grid connection agreement that could accommodate up to 600 MW.
