UK Public Supports Clean Energy Superpower Ambitions

A recent survey reveals that around two-thirds of people in the UK (64%) want the country to become a clean energy superpower, with 65% supporting the production of enough clean energy to export to other nations. These findings emerged from a nationally representative survey conducted by Opinium on behalf of the Manchester Prize.

Key Findings from the Survey

  • Leadership in Net Zero: 34% of respondents believe the UK should take a greater leadership role in helping the world achieve net zero emissions.
  • Green Technology Development: Nearly 40% (39%) think the UK should prioritize advancing green technology over the next five years.
  • AI and Clean Energy:
  • 42% believe countries that embrace AI technologies now will be more successful in ten years.
  • 47% support investing in the development of home-grown AI technologies.
  • Over a third (36%) want AI to reduce the cost of renewable energy production and dependence on imports, while 33% aim for AI to enhance home energy efficiency.

Government Commitment

Minister for AI, Feryal Clark, stated, “As set out in our Plan for Change, our mission is to make the UK a clean energy superpower. We are securing home-grown energy, protecting billpayers, and driving progress towards achieving clean power by 2030.” She emphasized the importance of the Manchester Prize, which supports advances in artificial intelligence to enact real change for communities across the country.

About the Manchester Prize

The Manchester Prize is a multi-million-pound challenge funded by the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. It aims to reward UK-led breakthroughs in artificial intelligence that contribute to clean energy and net zero goals. Managed by Challenge Works, a Nesta enterprise, the prize is currently in its second year.
