Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has granted planning approval for Vattenfall’s 1 GW Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm, marking a significant step in the country’s renewable energy efforts.
Project Overview
Located north of Borkum in Germany’s exclusive economic zone, the Nordlicht 1 project will feature a total of 68 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW. This development will become the largest offshore wind farm in German waters, utilizing monopile foundations at water depths ranging from 36 to 38 meters. The planned turbines boast a rotor diameter of 236 meters.
The electricity generated by the Nordlicht 1 wind farm will be transmitted to the BorWin Kappa converter platform through the NOR‐7‐2 grid connection system.
Power Purchase Agreement
In August, Vattenfall entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with steel producer Salzgitter for 75 MW of power over a period of 15 years. This agreement is expected to provide 300 gigawatt hours of electricity annually for steelmaking processes, reinforcing the role of renewable energy in industrial applications.
Turbine Supply

Vattenfall has partnered with Vestas to supply the V236-15.0 MW turbines for the Nordlicht 1 project, ensuring the use of cutting-edge technology for efficient energy production.
