Marico Limited, a leading FMCG company, has announced that 67.4% of its operational energy requirements, including electricity and thermal energy, are sourced from renewable resources. A significant milestone for Marico in FY24 has been its near-complete transition to bio-based briquettes for thermal energy, which has enabled the company to meet over 90% of its operational thermal energy needs from renewable sources.
Commitment to Sustainability
Guided by a robust sustainability framework, Marico’s achievement reflects its continuous commitment to sustainable progress through operational excellence, energy-efficient systems, and renewable energy options. The company is progressing towards its Sustainability Vision for 2030, building on the success of its inaugural five-year sustainability targets.
Net Zero Goals
Marico has outlined a comprehensive strategy to achieve Net Zero operational emissions in India by 2030 and globally by 2040. A central energy management cell has been established to define reduction strategies and monitor performance. By integrating low-carbon technologies, investing in renewable energy, and utilizing carbon sequestration techniques, Marico aims to eliminate fossil fuel usage entirely.
Climate Action Initiatives
As part of its climate action plan, Marico aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 93% in India, offsetting the remaining 7% through sequestration and carbon offsets by 2030. The company has already achieved a 79% reduction in direct GHG emissions compared to its base year, FY13. All Marico manufacturing facilities are now 100% coal-free, focusing on transitioning to renewable sources for operational energy needs.
Achievements in Energy Efficiency
The Perundurai facility has been externally certified as ‘carbon neutral’ for the fourth consecutive year. This state-of-the-art plant operates almost entirely on renewable energy and features smart energy installations that enhance operational efficiency. Energy-saving measures across equipment, along with the use of clean fuels such as bio-briquettes, have led to a consistent decrease in GHG emission intensity year-over-year, enabling the company to surpass its emission reduction targets.
Notably, the Sanand unit in Gujarat has increased its renewable energy share by 2.8 times in FY24, marking it as one of the company’s most advanced manufacturing setups.
Leadership Insights
Amit Bhasin, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of the CSR Committee at Marico Limited, commented, “Environmental stewardship has always been a core value for us. We constantly innovate to enhance energy efficiency and transition to renewable sources, aiming to minimize our environmental footprint throughout our value chain.”
Sustainability Vision 2030

Marico’s Sustainability Vision 2030 encompasses eight strategic themes, including Climate Change, Water Stewardship, Circular Economy, Responsible Sourcing, Purposeful Brands, Diversity and Inclusion, Sustainable Agriculture, and Corporate Governance. Guided by these themes, the company has implemented a robust framework to track and manage its environmental impact, driving multiple initiatives across its global operations.
