The Generation Procurement Entity (GPE) is pleased to confirm that Jamaica will add 100 MW of new clean energy capacity. This milestone reinforces Jamaica’s commitment to achieving 50% renewable energy in its electricity generation mix by 2030, in alignment with the National Energy Policy (NEP).
Recent Developments in Renewable Energy
Following the launch of the Request for Proposals (RFP) for the supply of up to 100 MW (Net) of electricity generation from renewable energy resources on a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) basis in September 2023, the GPE has announced the awardees after a comprehensive financial and technical evaluation of the submitted bids. The awarded projects are:
- Wigton Wind Farm Limited for a 49.83 MW solar photovoltaic farm.
- Sunterra Energy Jamaica Limited for a 50 MW solar photovoltaic farm.
On April 5, 2024, the GPE received twelve proposals offering a total of 482.03 MW. The bid submissions were evaluated based on their responsiveness to the RFP requirements, focusing on:
- Bidders’ financial ability to implement their proposed projects.
- Economic cost of energy for the project.
- Technical feasibility to meet performance requirements, including operational impact assessments on the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) electricity grid.
Support from International Partners
The GPE expresses gratitude for the technical support provided by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which helped refine the renewable energy RFP to meet Jamaica’s commitments to reducing carbon emissions. This development aligns with the objectives outlined in the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). Additionally, support from the World Bank has been instrumental in strengthening the GPE’s institutional capacity and laying the groundwork for scaling up renewable energy procurement.
Future Developments

The GPE remains committed to expanding Jamaica’s renewable energy capacity. Planning for the next tranche of renewable energy procurement, targeting over 168 MW, is already underway. The GPE will provide more information in the upcoming months.
