Azerbaijan Aims for 30% Renewable Energy by 2030

Azerbaijan has set ambitious goals, aiming for a 30% share of renewable energy in the country’s overall energy balance by 2030. This transition is crucial for achieving long-term sustainability and energy security, despite the challenges that lie ahead. Azerbaijan demonstrates that commitment and innovation can effectively transform national energy strategies.

Investment in Renewable Energy

To support this transition, Azerbaijan plans to invest $2.8 billion in renewable energy by 2027. This investment will facilitate the construction and integration of eight large solar and wind power plants into the national energy system, totaling approximately two gigawatts of capacity. This figure is not arbitrary; it is based on thorough assessments conducted by a US consulting firm and confirmed by a Turkish consulting company. These estimates reflect the renewable energy capacity that the national grid can integrate by 2027, accounting for necessary modernizations and improvements.

COP29: A Platform for Climate Action

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) commenced on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium and will run until November 22. This event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and marks the first time COP is held in the region.

Key events during COP29 included a summit of world leaders on climate action, held on November 12-13. The primary expectation from COP29 is to reach an agreement on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) regarding climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has also launched 14 initiatives linking climate action with the Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives include:

  • Green energy corridors
  • Green energy storage
  • Climate resilience strategies
  • Clean hydrogen development
  • Methane reduction in organic waste
  • Green digital technologies

The Importance of Climate Finance

Creating a robust climate finance framework is a top priority, as it facilitates action towards fulfilling the 1.5°C climate pledge and brings all stakeholders together. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The acronym COP stands for “Conference of Parties,” which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of this framework.
