TotalEnergies, a global integrated energy company, is committed to enhancing Uganda’s energy security through various renewable energy initiatives. According to Mariam Nampeera Mbowa, Deputy General Manager of TotalEnergies Uganda, the company’s focus on solar energy aims to improve livelihoods and reduce the carbon footprint in the region.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
At the Renewable Energy Conference 2024 (REC24) held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Mbowa emphasized TotalEnergies’ dedication to solar energy. This commitment includes plans to deploy over 120 MW of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) technology as part of Uganda’s energy transition. The company aims to support the deployment of 1 GW of renewable energy in Uganda by 2030, with ongoing feasibility studies and project development in districts like Kapeeka, Iganga, Tororo, Kumi, Bukedea, and Pallisa.
Project Progress
As part of its initiative, TotalEnergies is developing solar power plants, with significant progress reported on two sites in Iganga and Tororo. These sites are expected to reach commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2026, each generating 20 MW of solar power.
Hydropower Investments
In July 2024, TotalEnergies acquired a 28.3% stake in the Bujagali hydropower plant, which has a capacity of 250 MW and supplies over 25% of Uganda’s peak electricity demand. This acquisition reflects TotalEnergies’ commitment to supporting Africa’s energy transition by increasing access to renewable energy.
Clean Cooking Initiatives
TotalEnergies is also focusing on clean cooking solutions in Africa, aiming to benefit 100 million people through its initiatives. In Uganda, where nearly 90% of the population relies on biomass and biofuels, the company is constructing an 80-kilo tonne per year LPG plant as part of the Tilenga project to promote cleaner cooking fuels.
E-Mobility Initiatives
On the topic of e-mobility, Mbowa highlighted TotalEnergies’ efforts in supporting battery swapping stations and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The initiative aims to reduce air pollution caused by two-stroke motorcycle engines in urban areas.
Climate Ambition

TotalEnergies is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050 and is transforming into a multi-energy company. The company’s two-pillar multi-energy strategy focuses on meeting global energy demands while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy production.
Conclusion
Through its investments in solar energy, hydropower, and clean cooking technologies, TotalEnergies is playing a pivotal role in Uganda’s renewable energy landscape. The company’s efforts align with global sustainability goals and demonstrate a commitment to improving energy access and environmental sustainability in Africa.
