Green-fingered volunteers and school pupils in Peterhead are helping to keep the ‘Blue Toon’ beautiful, thanks to SSEN Transmission’s Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project, which has donated essential equipment to enhance their local environment.
Supporting Outdoor Education
Among the items donated to Peterhead Academy’s outdoor education group were a lawnmower, safety boots, and wellies. This initiative supports pupils in achieving awards linked to outdoor learning, focusing on conservation, community, upcycling, and horticulture.
Working alongside key contractor Keltbray Infrastructure Services Limited (KISL), the EGL2 project team visited the school to hand over the equipment to pupils and volunteers involved in this important initiative.
Enhancing Local Green Spaces
The donated items will enable the students and volunteers to maintain green spaces around the school, including a sensory garden and raised beds constructed from donated or recycled materials. The group also undertakes offsite community environmental projects, and this equipment will help them expand their efforts while ensuring safety for all participants.

Gillian Doig, SSEN Transmission’s EGL2 community liaison manager, stated: “We are delighted to support Peterhead Academy’s outdoor education group. This donation not only enhances the green spaces around the school but also provides more opportunities for students to engage safely in community activities. The EGL2 project is committed to creating a lasting legacy in the local community by supporting initiatives that promote environmental well-being.”
Community Impact
Trevor Spence from KISL added: “By supporting the Outdoor Education Group at Peterhead Academy, we contribute to an initiative that equips young people with valuable skills while enhancing green spaces for the community. The inclusion of beekeeping in their program, where students can take home honey, is especially impressive and beneficial.”
Michelle Shields, the community learning and development worker at Peterhead Academy, expressed gratitude for the donation. She noted, “This support helps young people achieve awards linked to outdoor learning, which positively impacts their well-being. Our program fosters inclusion and pride in the community while promoting self-belief and confidence.”
Conclusion
Through this donation, SSEN Transmission and Keltbray Infrastructure Services are empowering young people in Peterhead to engage in meaningful environmental activities, fostering a culture of conservation and community well-being.
