EU Funds €190,000 for Polish Green Hydrogen Project

PNE has been granted €190,000 in EU funding for the Polish Cross Border Pomeranian Green Hydrogen Cluster project, aimed at exploring connections to the European hydrogen network. This funding was awarded to PNE in collaboration with Polish and German gas network operators GAZ-SYSTEM and GASCADE, selected from numerous applications.

Project Overview

In the Cross Border Pomeranian Green Hydrogen Cluster project, PNE’s Polish subsidiary, Sevivon, plans to develop wind farms and photovoltaic plants with a total rated output of approximately 2 GW in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. This renewable energy will power two 500 MW electrolysers, which are essential for decarbonizing sectors of the industry that cannot be electrified, such as steel and chemicals.

The developer emphasized that for green energy to succeed, especially in these industries, green hydrogen must be available in sufficient quantities and at competitive prices. The Cross Border Pomeranian Green Hydrogen Cluster leverages favorable production conditions and low distribution costs made possible by direct connections to the European hydrogen network.

Milestone for Green Hydrogen

PNE’s Chief Executive, Per Hornung Pedersen, expressed satisfaction with this milestone, stating, “We are pleased to announce another milestone for one of the largest internal productions of green hydrogen in Europe. With this project, we hope to contribute significantly to the market ramp-up of green hydrogen and make a substantial contribution to independent energy security.”

To enable hydrogen production, comprehensive infrastructure in gas and electricity grids is necessary. PNE has entered into a cooperation agreement with GAZ-SYSTEM and GASCADE Gastransport GmbH to facilitate this development.

The financial support is provided by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program. The initial funding will finance feasibility studies on connecting the electrolysers to the European hydrogen network, including links to Poland’s national hydrogen network and cross-border connections between the German and Polish networks.

Conclusion

With this funding, PNE aims to advance the production of green hydrogen in Europe, promoting sustainability while enhancing energy security across the region.
